Report of Okinawa Trip 12.5.03 - 20.5.03	沖縄旅行レポート 2003/5/12〜5/20
Ishigakijima (IG) 12,13,14 (to 9.30 AM),16 Iriomotejima (IM) 14 (from 11.30 AM),15 (to 2PM) Okinawa main island (O) 17 (from 10AM),18,19,20(to 10AM) This trip was together with Mr. Gorge.	石垣島 5/12、13、14（9:30まで）、16 西表島 5/14（11:30から）、15（14時まで） 沖縄本島 5/17（10時から）、18、19、20（10時まで） 同行者はGorgeさん。
We tried to be too smart on this trip , arriving late enough for the summer terns and early enough to get some late migrants . It looked like Black-naped Terns were just beginng to arrive when we left but no sign of any Roseate . Not many migrants about . Maybe we would have found more if we'd had more time to search the north of Okinawa main island .	我々は、旅行の日程については充分吟味したつもりだった。つまり夏のアジサシ類を見るためには充分遅いように、そしてさらに春の渡りの後半には間に合うようにと。しかし結果としては、エリグロアジサシは我々が去ろうとした時に到着し始めたようだったし、ベニアジサシはまったく見られなかった。さらには渡り鳥も多くはなかった。今更だけど、たぶん、もう少し沖縄本島の北部に時間を避くべきだっただろう。そうすれば、もっと多くの鳥たちを見ることができたかも。
Anyway , Ishigaki went quite smoothly . We were able to get most of our target birds ( Banded Crake , Malay Night Heron , Cinnamon Bittern , Emerald Dove , Red-capped Green Pigeon , Ryukyu Scops Owl ) pretty easily . Barred Buttonquail proved more difficult but eventually we got good views .	それはそうと、石垣島はとてもよかった。我々は、石垣島では見たかった鳥のほとんどをとても簡単に見ることができた。オオクイナ、ズグロミゾゴイ、リュウキュウヨシゴイ、キンバト、ズアカアオバト、リュウキュウコノハズクなどである。ミフウズラだけは思ったより苦労したけど、結局はたっぷり見られた。
Couldn't find Watercock . Thought we might have glimpsed one several times flying up from the rice fields , but couldn't confirm it .	でもツルクイナだけは見られなかった。水田地帯でそれらしいのが飛び立つのは見たけど、識別までには到らなかった。
Did a night ride up into the central hills looking for Ryukyu Scops Owl . We heard the calls all over the place and finally managed to get one in the flashlight . Came across 3 habu ( we think ) on the road in the process.	夜は車で中央の丘陵（訳注：パンナ岳のこと）に行って、リュウキュウコノハズクを探した。いたるところで声はするけどなかなか見つからない。でも最後にはなんとか懐中電灯を照らして一羽を見ることができた。ちなみに、その時のドライブでは３匹のハブ（だと思う）を路上で見た。
We took the slow cargo boat to Iriomote ( 2 hours ) . Did see Crested Terns , a Brown Booby and some distant terns which were probably Black-naped , but it was a pretty quiet crossing . The trip back we did by a fast boat and it was raining - only saw Great Creasted Terns .	西表島には足の遅い貨客船で行った。（所要時間二時間）オオアジサシ、カツオドリ、他のアジサシ類（たぶんエリグロ）などが見られたが、基本的にはさびしい航海であった。帰路は高速船を利用した。雨が降っていて、見られたのはオオアジサシだけだった。
Enjoyed the plants and animals ( lots of great frogs and the interesting turtle that closed completely like a box ) , but didn't find many birds .	（西表島は）植物と動物（大きいカエルたくさん、箱みたいにぴったり閉じた変なカメ！）は楽しかったけど、鳥はあまり多くなかった。
Back to Ishigaki for another day looking for Watercock and hoping for some terns to arrive . Did confirm 2 Black-naped Terns off Anpura.	だからツルクイナ探しとアジサシ類の期待を込めて、一日で石垣島に戻った。なんとか安原でエリグロアジサシ２羽を確認できた。
All in all , we were pretty satisfied with Ishigaki and Iriomote - our luck changed on Okinawa main island.	なんだかんだいっても、我々は石垣島と西表島にはかなり満足していた。しかしその幸運も沖縄本島では変わってしまった。
Found Pryer's Woodpecker reasonably easily along rindo . The sound of flapping wings made them easy to locate when they were around . Unfortunately , Okinawa Rail proved to be much more difficult . Spent most of out time round the Fungawa dam area and although the rails called loudly ( up to 3 or 4 birds ) in the mornings , evenings and sporadically through the day , they wouldn't come out . We didn't even have time to look for Ryukyu Robins ( singing everywhere ) in the morning and failed to see this bird too . Went out on the 18th at night with flashlights looking for roosting birds but heavy rain forced us to give up.	ノグチゲラ（Okinawa Woodpekkerとも）は林道で簡単に見られた。ノグチゲラは翼をばたばたする音をさせるので、近くにいると簡単に見つけられるのだ。しかし、残念なことにヤンバルクイナは非常に難物だった。我々はフンガーダム周辺で多くの時間を費やした。クイナは大きな声で鳴いてはいた。朝、夕方だけでなく、たまには日中にも。（３-４羽くらいいたと思う）　しかし、見えるところに出てきてはくれなかった。さらにアカヒゲについては（各所で囀ってたんだけど）朝には探す時間を取れなくて、結局見逃した。5/18の夜には懐中電灯を持って出かけてみたが、雨が激しなったので観察は諦めざるを得なかった。

Stopped at Kin on the way back to Naha and spent a couple of hours at Man ko on the final morning but it was high tide .	最後の日の朝、那覇に戻る途中に金武や漫湖に寄ってみたが、満潮であまりよくなかった。
In retrospect , we spent too long on Ishigaki and should have allowed 1 more day for Yambaru . Still , it's good to have a reason to go back again !	振り返ってみれば、我々は石垣島で時間を使いすぎだった。ヤンバルにもう1日を費やすべきだったと思う。とはいえ、再び沖縄に帰ってくる理由を持つことはよいことだ！
